What are electrolytes?

Electrolytes are minerals in your body that carry an electric charge when dissolved in water. They are vital for various physiological functions, including maintaining the balance of fluids in and out of cells, regulating nerve and muscle function, balancing blood acidity and pressure, and helping to rebuild damaged tissues. The primary electrolytes in the human body include sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, bicarbonate, and phosphate.

6 Benefits of electrolytes

Electrolytes play a crucial role in hydration by helping to regulate the balance of fluids in and out of your cells, tissues, and blood vessels. Here's how electrolytes contribute to hydration:

1. Maintaining Fluid Balance

  • Osmosis: Electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride help maintain fluid balance through osmosis, which is the movement of water across cell membranes. When electrolytes are present in the right concentrations on either side of a cell membrane, they attract water and keep it evenly distributed between the inside and outside of cells. This helps prevent cells from becoming too dehydrated (shrinking) or overly hydrated (swelling).
  • Sodium and potassium: Sodium is primarily found outside the cells, while potassium is found inside. The sodium-potassium pump, a cell membrane protein, actively transports sodium out of cells and potassium into cells, maintaining a gradient that regulates water movement and fluid balance.
